Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to question specific rulings from the official, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
