A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
