At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
